What To Do Before Your Spray Tan?
You have to make certain preparation before you decide to start a tanning session. There are simple steps that you need to take to get that perfect tanned look. You should exfoliate your skin before going for a tan spray. Pay special attention to your elbows and knees. Also, take care that you shave at least 6 hours before the session. Even then, avoid using any kind of shaving cream, because the lanolin present in the cream does not allow the skin to get tanned. If you have to get a wax done, take an appointment two days prior to the tanning session. In addition to this, only apply non-oil based cream at least 2 hours before going for a tan spray. Do not apply any kind of oil or greasy moisturizers before going to the tanning salon. Of course, remove any kind of makeup that you have on before the session starts to avoid getting a botched up job.
What To Wear For Your Spray Tan?
Dark and loose fitting clothes should be worn when going for a tan. They keep you comfortable during the session. The active tanning ingredient should not interact with the clothes you are wearing, and hence the loose fitting clothes. Cottons are preferable any day. You have to absolutely avoid clothing made out of silk, nylon, and even wool for the simple reason that these materials will interact with the DHA present in the tanning solution. It then causes the clothes to stain and the tan gets a little uneven. You have to observe this for at least eight hours after the tanning solution has been applied. If you are getting a full body tan, then regulations mandate that you wear at least a thong. We have disposable thongs in case you need them.
How Long Does Each Session Take?
The length of a tanning session can vary from person to person. Typically, it takes about 15 minutes for a person to get a full body spray tan. But, then again, if you are a newbie, it may take more time with all the formalities before the actual session itself. The tanning attendant has to know your medical history and make you understand the procedure. They also have to ascertain that you are comfortable doing it and ease you into it.
Immediate After-Care Of Your Spray Tan
This is a very important piece of information for you. Once you are done with your spray tan, do not take a shower for the next eight, and if possible, twelve hours. This is the period when the tanning solution is reacting with the skin to leave you with that much desired sun-kissed look. So, you do not want to disturb the process. Do not indulge in any kind of strenuous physical activity like exercising. Not only this, you have to keep away from moisturizing yourself during those 12 hours when the magic actually happens. After this stipulated time, you are free to resume your daily routine. And, one more thing. When you take your first shower after the tanning session, some of the color may come off the skin. Do not panic. This is not the tan wearing off, but the cosmetic bronzer that is getting washed away. Once it is washed away, you will be left with that naturally tanned shade of skin.
How To Maintain Your Spray Tan?
You have to avoid moisturizers before taking your first shower, because it can produce a number of streaks on your skin. But once you have taken a bath, the moisturizer will actually help you prolong the life of the tan on your skin. But take care that you are using only water based moisturizers at this stage. Oily moisturizers are just going to mess with your tan and you are going to end up with botched colored skin and nobody like discoloration. Exfoliating is also a big no-no up until 2 days after the tanning session. Even after 2 days, make it a habit to exfoliate gently, so that you can prolong the life of your tan.
A good tanning procedure can last anywhere from four to ten days, depending on how much strictly you follow all the tips. During this time, it is absolutely essential to use the right products. Otherwise, the tan will wear off in no time. Some of the products that you should keep away from include bar soaps, AHA products, BHA products, facial masks, scrubs, body sprays (applied directly to the skin), make up removers, hair removal products, and so on.
Do I Still Need To Wear Sun Screen?
One word of caution here. You may have a tanned look and all. But, you will still need sunscreen lotions to protect your skin from the sun rays. So, protect your skin from sunburn and apply a lotion. Also, ask your tanning attendant to advise you on the products that you can use to keep your tanned look longer.
Can I Go Out Immediately After A Spray Tan?
Once you are done with a spray tan, there won’t be any side effects that will prevent you from facing the sun, air, or the elements. But, it is always better that you take a little time off and let the spray tan completely settle in your skin. For a newbie, it is advisable that you reserve the day for yourself. Sit back and relax. More than anything else, the not taking shower part and the staining can embarrass you. Also, different skin types react differently to spray tans. Some may not take up color that well, while others can get darker than expected. Also, you might end up smelling a certain way. Since you cannot take a shower during the waiting period, you cannot get rid of the smell for the next eight hours. So, it is in your best interest that you give the tan a little time to settle and then go out and have fun. However, if you have to absolutely go out, there is one thing you can do. Find a nice perfume to mask the smell. Again, do not apply the perfume directly onto your skin. Either apply it on your clothes or spray it in the surrounding air.
